Building supplies and insulation material manufactured before the 1970s commonly contained asbestos. Builders used these materials to build homes, office buildings, and warehouses throughout the United Sates. Asbestos was used when products needed to resist heat and fire. Based on studies, people in industries who were exposed to asbestos, experience the following:

  • Asbestosis, when lung scarring occur
  • Mesothelioma, a cancer of the chest lining and the abdomen
  • Lung Cancer

If you stumble across an area you suspect may contain asbestos, avoid contact, and visually inspect the area for loose fibers, wear, or other types of surface damage. If the material is damaged or becomes damaged, the US Department of Public Health (DPH) recommends that a licensed asbestos contractor is used to abate the material. Abatement may involve repair, enclosure, encapsulation or removal of the material.
